Artist: Rusty Bova Song: I Have Decided To Follow Jesus CD: Jazzin' With Jesus Genre: jazz Label:Gospel That Swings Homepage
Rusty Bova’s love for music was highly influenced by his parent’s enjoyment of big band music. But when his parents introduced the recordings of the legendary Benny Goodman, his life would be impacted in a major way.
During the Fifth grade, Rusty met with the local band instructor for the new season band round up. The band instructor told Rusty that he would make a great trombone player. Astounded, Rusty said, “No! I want to play the clarinet like Benny Goodman!” From that point forward and no turning back, his Dad purchased a wooden clarinet.
In addition to regular clarinet lessons, His Mom would play the old 78-phonograph recording of Benny Goodman’s “My Blue Heaven”. She would sing every note of the song so Rusty could find the notes and play them. After grueling attempts and many honks and squeaks “My Blue Heaven” became Rusty’s first big band song. Later his parents introduced another clarinet great, Pete Fountain and Sax legend, Boots Randolph. By this time, Rusty started to learn the meaning, “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.”
Rusty pursued an early professional career in Musical Instrument Repair. This pursuit became the beginning of over three decades as a Music Store and Music Academy Educator and Business Owner. (Visit www.ChooChooMusic.com )
Prior to graduating from the State University College of Fredonia, NY as a Music Education Major, Rusty was a member of the Fredonia Clarinet Ensemble, the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble and the Theatrical Orchestra. Rusty was recognized as a fine musician and a sought after repairman even to assist the college violin repair department.
Rusty has performed with the legendary Earl “Fatha” Hines, Billy Eckstien, Bill Tolle and Larnelle Harris and many others too. He performed the Weber Clarinet Concerto in New Orleans and toured the Country of Spain. Guest Conductor and Artist for Chautauqua Institution and Alfred State University. Served as Music Educator for Jamestown Community College and Entrepreneur. Rusty continues to perform many Jazz Evangelistic Concerts, Christian Festivals, Christian Radio and Television. “Jazz is so unique says Rusty, that it gives way to a gentle seamless introduction and entertaining experience to introduce the gospel.”
In 1985, Rusty had the amazing encounter with God’s only Son, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. When Jesus changed his life, he was very much called to the Lord’s Ministry and a unique one indeed. Rusty is founder of “Gospel That Swings”. With new meaning on life, Rusty began to arrange, record and perform classic hymns, jazz standards and swing arrangements in the 1940’s Big Band style including original works. All available on CD as well as on the internet.
Rusty is married to his beautiful wife Suzanne, together with 2 beautiful children, Jennifer and Michael. Now that’s “Gospel That Swings”!

Bernadette Harold started her singing at an early age, but you wouldn't have expected anything less with a father known as 'DJ Pete' and a mother whose passion is singing. Her early musical influences came from listening to her father play records from Motown to Southern Gospel around the house and at family celebrations. It was during those times he would spontaneously give her the microphone and record her singing 'The Candy Man.'
At the tender age of ten, Bernadette gave her heart to the Lord and began singing with her siblings in The Reflection of The Divine Life Choir at Southern Baptist Church under the direction of Kevin Christopher. At that moment Bernadette's life was transformed. "Being used by God changed my life, I realized that singing was the vocation I wanted to do for the rest of my life ... there is no greater joy."
This experience afforded her the opportunity to sing at the world famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem N.Y.Bernadette continued her singing in the Youth Choir at First Baptist Church of Brownville directed by Alvin Freeland. It was there that Pastor Freeland took notice of her gift of singing and adopted her into his singing group, Alvin Freeland Co. From there, it would be an 8 year journey that would take her all over New York, New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina and Chicago. In addition to her 8 years of singing and traveling, she also sang with the world-renowned Reverend Timothy Wright and the Concert Choir.
One would think that singing and traveling would satisfy this up and coming songbird, but it didn't. Bernadette decided to step out on her own. It was then she would give solo performances at the well-known NYC club, Sweet Waters. Although secular genre like Jazz and RB was her main repertoire, gospel was not far from her heart. She later returned to her gospel roots when she re-dedicated her heart to the Lord and joined the Grammy Award Winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir directed by Carol Cymbala. For the past 13 years as a member of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Bernadette has had the privileged of ministering in song at street meetings, churches across this nation, and from Madison Square Garden in NYC to Jamaica and Bermuda.
After the birth of her second son, Maurice, God began to bless Bernadette with the gift of song writing. One of her songs, 'You Are Someone,' which was written for her son's kindergarten graduation, has become the theme song for the school. To date, she has written numerous gospel songs.
When asked what her greatest honor she says is, "The greatest honor of all is singing for Christ and being in His presence. I can not see myself singing for anyone else."
Bernadette Harold resides in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, Maurice Harold and their three children David, Maurice, and Valerie. She is a woman full of love, integrity and laughter.
Ray White (Frank Zappa Band and Zappa Plays Zappa)
Ed Englerth’s ‘Restless Ghost’ rocks its way through 13 intelligent-folk-jazz-blues tunes. Ed’s band is in top form on this recording and Ed’s friend, Ray White (Frank Zappa Band & Zappa Plays Zappa), drops by to lend a hand too.
How does Englerth keep that continuity of sound while at the same time covering such a multiplicity of styles? Maybe it’s that rhythmic groove that runs through his songs. Whatever Ed’s magic touch is, one doesn’t have to understand how Ed does it to enjoy this great CD. . . . (and if you do understand how, all the better.)
Ed Englerth is a legend in this business. He has played music with; Ray White (Frank Zappa & Zappa Plays Zappa), Kenny Meeks (Sixpence None The Richer), Joe English (Paul McCartney & Wings), Robin Robbins (Bob Seger), John Lawry (Petra), Jan Krist, Ben Brown, Jim Cole, Aracely, Jim Earp, Scott Roley, Dave Perkins, Donny Hartman (Frost), Xalt, Armada, Linear Action Band, Aslan, Harvey Jet (Black Oak Arkansas) , and Earthen Vessel.
