For Denny and Kenny Scott, the accomplished songwriters and performers in L.A. five-piece Echo Jet, a good song is all about melody, an interesting, non-clichÈd lyric, and professional production. Those are qualities abundantly evident on the band’s self-titled debut recording, led by monster single “Wave.”
“Our writing has always been very melodic,” Denny notes. “We grew up on that kind of songwriting—bands like INXS, early U2 and Tears For Fears, who had that combination of cool guitar lines with cool melodies and interesting lyrics.”
Actually, Denny’s being too modest. Hook-laden rockers like the ones they mention did more than influence them. After years of slugging it out in the biz, the two brothers now count many heroes as peers—people like Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, Beck) and Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne). In fact, the two Navy brats, still in their teens at the time, decided to turn their musical hobby into a career after hanging out with radio hitmakers The Outfield.

When Stephanie Smith got her first glimpse of the father she’d desperately missed all of her 14 years, her heart was in her throat. She waited breathlessly as he greeted her mother and her brother, then finally turned to Stephanie. But his words were anything but the healing she’d dreamed of for so long. He said, “And this must be Priscilla?”
In the aftermath of that meeting, Stephanie processed a great many life lessons. Following a spiritual reality check she experienced while singing with a rock band she joined during college, a fateful door was opened for Stephanie to travel overseas. “I ended up going to Guatemala on a mission trip. If anyone is struggling with pride or self-righteousness,” she laughs, “you need to go haul cinder blocks up a mountain. The hard work will cure you!”
Her compelling redemption story drives the hope-drenched lyrics and gutsy honesty of Not Afraid, a debut overflowing with solid pop rock anthems, all written or co-written by Stephanie. Her raw vocals shine on the fiercely-delivered “Superstar” while the pop-rock track “Beauty” directs toward peace within. One listen to the thick guitars of the powerhouse title track “Not Afraid” makes it obvious that Stephanie is a rock chick at heart. The catchy breakup song reminds what relationships are really about. And on the stunningly vulnerable piano ballad “First Words,” she opens up about that first encounter with her father. Smith and producer Jamie Moore worked together to accomplish the perfect mix of immaculate arrangements and captivating lyrics. Producer Chris Stevens, known for his work with Tobymac, Sanctus Real, and Group 1 Crew, added his hand to the standout "Renew Me."
Beyond the music, Stephanie ministers regularly with Soles4Soles, a Nashville-based non-profit that facilitates the donation of shoes to the hurting worldwide. She also has a long-standing relationship with the Pure Freedom founders—at age 13, she attended their very first sexual purity retreat. “I still wear my pearl around my neck today,” she shares, “and it’s been neat to come around full circle and now partner with them.”

The inception of Random Eyes goes back to 2001 when original members Timo and Christian began writing material and laying the foundation for the band. Initial incarnations of the group went through stages of metamorphosis during which certain revolving members came and went, ultimately bringing Random Eyes to the solid line-up it holds today. Random Eyes released their debut offering Eyes Ablaze in 2003, featuring gothic metal influences.
The band's direction has changed over the past few years, going in a more trendy, grandiose riff-oriented direction.

BIO:
While living in Los Angeles, Corey Bates spent his time writing songs late nights in his truck at the Santa Monica Mountains. "I felt like I needed to be completely secluded and let the inspiration flow, so I would sit in the cab of my truck with a flashlight, guitar and lyric pad and just write for hours" recalls Bates. He decided to return to his home state of NY and find the perfect bandmates that would compliment the music; recruiting the ambiguous and talented Sir Hook and drummer Stix (Scott).
Even before playing their first show, music supervisors showed interest in the music Corey had written and his songs began to show up on HBO, Pay-Per-View and PBS. Also, the band is enjoying a bit of "cult-status" as their song 'Alternate Lifestyle' was placed in Dane Cook's Tourgasm series and later on the soundtrack alongside rock heavy weights Wolfmother.
Cruelty Free is not about contriving a sound. There are vast influences that may seem to be polar-opposites of each other, such as Depeche Mode, Foo Fighters, Dead Can Dance, Failure, Weezer and Jeff Buckley.
The music can be melancholy, deep, high-energy, sarcastic, and seem to originate from an altered state of consciousness. If there is a philosophy behind the sound, it is that the music should take many turns as did the music of Led Zepplin or The Beatles. Corey, Scott and Hook all have years experience playing, writing, recording and performing. One would think the tendency for such a group would be to use that experience and develop a "formula"...but that is not the case here.
Part of what drives the band is choosing to let things happen organically rather than settle for the "flavor-of-the-month" sound. In an industry that is littered with songwriting clinics and music industry "how to" books, it is seemingly too easy to fall into the trap of choosing a sound. Simply put, Cruelty Free is a band that is constantly evolving outside of its boundaries of guitar-driven, alt pop!
