WINESKIN
(Words by Jeremy N. Willet / Music by Willet)
If your enemy is hungry, then prepare a feast
And if the city is thirsty, then break the wineskin
Do I even threaten you to move?
Would you change the world, if the world changed you?
Shoot the bullet to the sky
Aim at nothing
Hit it every time
Fight the battle with a gun
Aim at nothing
Hit it every time
Watch her dance across the street
The city lights and beggar\'s dreams
A homeless man is who I have to fight
Spare change in a dirty, old paper cup
Won't change my life, but could it change yours?
WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
The first line of the chorus, “Shoot the bullet into the sky, aim at nothing and hit it every time” describes a life of no purpose, a spirit with no vision. “Fight the battle with a gun,” alludes to the fact that each of us has some sort of motivation. We have a desire to help other people…to extend a hand to someone in need. But sometimes this passion needs to be rekindled. We need to be equipped, ready for battle with our “loaded gun” in order to fight the opposition.
Proverbs 25:21 says,
“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.”
It’s expected when we step out in faith to serve God that we will be approached with enemy force, but Christ commands us to show love to our enemy regardless of the situation so that in return, we may be the light in the darkness. “If your enemy is thirsty, then prepare a feast, and if the city is thirsty, then break the wineskin.”
In the song, the phrase “give him water to drink” was replaced by the phrase, “break the wineskin” to elaborate on the meaning behind the lyrics. The first verse obviously displays the message of Proverbs 25:21, however, in the Bible, Jesus talks about not putting “old wine” into “new wineskin” because it would ruin the fine preparation of such tradition. I incorporated the word “wineskin” into the idea of Proverbs 25:21 to display the importance of portraying love at all costs to “the dark.”
Wine was and still is important to many people for a meal, celebration, or as a way of showing friendship. If trust is built between you and your brother or sister, then a conversation about Christ could become easily initiated.
The remaining verse talks about how we easily let the world mold and shape us into what it wants us to be, rather than us being bold enough to stand for what we believe in. “Do I even threaten you to move, would you change the world if the world changed you?” Even though the world as a whole may not be ready for a change, there are individual souls crying out in desperation for someone to speak out the truth. They need someone who will openly offer unconditional love in all forms.
